China is catching up quickly in the AI race. Several Chinese models are now performing as well as, and in some cases better than, leading U.S. systems in certain tests. Chinese AI is also attracting users because it tends to be cheaper, while the country has made strong progress in open-source models, robotics and other AI technologies.
The U.S. still has a major edge when it comes to computing power. American companies have better access to advanced chips, deep pools of private investment and a strong supply of AI talent. U.S. restrictions on chip exports have also made it harder for Chinese companies to build and run the most powerful models.
China isn’t standing still․ Its companies are developing their own chips‚ and figuring out ways to work around those computing limits․ If Chinese AI achieves wider use in developing countries‚ it could give Beijing a new lever of influence․ For now‚ the US is ahead․ But China is coming on rapidly‚ and it is not clear who will win out․
