Russia airlines dominate this highly specialist market, providing a solution for 75% of all such air movements and have done so since the first Volga-Dnepr Airlines’ commercial flight took to the skies in 1990.
The unique heavy and oversize air cargo market using ramp freighter aircraft is growing faster than that of scheduled services – an average of 10-12% p.a. in cash terms. Forecasts predict it will be worth US$3 billion per annum by 2020 and $7 billion by 2030.
Russia airlines dominate this highly specialist market, providing a solution for 75% of all such air movements and have done so since the first Volga-Dnepr Airlines’ commercial flight took to the skies in 1990.
Prior to this an oil and gas exploration project, for example, could be losing millions of dollars a day while it often waited weeks for a vital piece of replacement equipment to be delivered to site by road and sea. The arrival of the giant AN-124-100 ‘Ruslan’ freighter with its 120 tons payload capacity and the smaller but equally capable IL-76 cargo aircraft revolutionised the market.
Since then, these two unique ramp loading cargo aircrafts have served customers in hundreds of destinations across the globe working for industry sectors including heavy construction, oil and gas, aerospace, automotive and telecommunications. Governments and charities are other regular customers.
Volga-Dnepr Airlines is the world’s largest carrier of outsize and heavyweight air cargo and its solutions go far beyond simply providing aircraft capacity. With the launch of its Engineering & Logistics Centre in 2009, the airline began offering customers a complete door-to-door service for their heavyweight and oversized cargo shipments, incorporating:
• Provision of ground equipment at airports for on/offloading
• Cargo trucking to/from airports, including obtaining all necessary permits
• Technical assessment of cargo and its preparation for shipping
• Design and manufacture of special transportation equipment for complex projects
• Advice on probable transportation methods for specific cargo consignments, including packing and cargo preparation recommendations
• Assistance with security customs clearance and insurance
• Use of smaller contracted aircraft from partner Airlines (AN-12, AN-26, AN-72) to offer the best value for customers whose shipments are best suited to these aircraft types
Combining these additional services with over 20 years of successful outsize and heavyweight air cargo transportation experience, Volga-Dnepr can also organise and manage the use of other transport modes in the delivery cycle including road, rail and ocean, if this helps to support a specific customer requirement.
