SUMMARY:Fighting organised numbness: unpacking necropower and disposability on the margins of (un)learning\, (dis)embodiment and (re)orienting - University of Oxford: Saïd Business School
DESCRIPTION:Fighting organized numbness: unpacking necropower and disposability on the margins of (un)learning\, (dis)embodiment and (re)orienting \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganized numbness is a learned desensitization and disembodied habituation\, the organized inability to perceive sensations\, operating in the way our (1) bodies\, (2) language\, and (3) knowledge are constructed\, disciplined and organized\, thereby heavily impacting our actions. And if organized numbness is learned—in that it is internalized through rules\, socialization mechanisms\, writing conventions\, and ideological premises—it can also be unlearned. Exploring the tensions of unlearning\, of dis-and re-embodiment\, and of re-orienting we can push back the margins of isolation\, indifferent contempt and the various forms of violence operating through mechanisms of necropower and disposability that permeate many of our organized relations\, as illustrated by several key examples. Situating ourselves at these margins (as our chosen place\, understood dynamically\, as bordering process) fosters our capacity for organizing with and through resonance and ethical relationality to produce a form of knowledge which is not ‘numb’.

SUMMARY:Boundary Cases in Stakeholder Theory - University of Oxford: Saïd Business School
DESCRIPTION:Scholarly\, political\, and practical interest in responsible business is resurgent. As the debates over responsible business have ebbed and flowed over the decades\, novel terminology has emerged…and dissolved (CSR\, ESG\, license to operate\, etc.\, etc.). Stakeholder theory\, in contrast\, has continued its steady growth in both adherents and critics as well as its theoretical coherence and usefulness. Developmental disagreements about the proper application context and boundary conditions of the theory have been part of this on-going process of conceptual refinement. Advancing this refinement exercise\, this lecture will consider how\, if at all\, stakeholder theory responds to calls for the more explicit and direct inclusion of 1) non-human nature and 2) victims of exploitation and human rights violations. We will also examine the viability and pragmatic coherence of “instrumental” stakeholder theory as a delimiting boundary condition.

SUMMARY:Amy C. Edmondson: Right Kind of Wrong - The Science of Failing Well - INSEAD
DESCRIPTION:Winner of the Financial Times and Schroders Business Book of the Year 2023 A revolutionary guide that will transform your relationship with failure\, from the pioneering researcher of psychological safety and award-winning Harvard Business School professor Amy Edmondson. We used to think of failure as the opposite of success. \nNow\, we’re often torn between two “failure cultures”: one that says to avoid failure at all costs\, the other that says fail fast\, fail often. The trouble is that both approaches lack the crucial distinctions to help us separate good failure from bad. As a result\, we miss the opportunity to fail well. After decades of award-winning research\, Amy Edmondson is here to upend our understanding of failure and make it work for us. \nIn Right Kind of Wrong\, Edmondson provides the framework to think\, discuss\, and practice failure wisely. Outlining the three archetypes of failure—basic\, complex\, and intelligent—Amy showcases how to minimize unproductive failure while maximizing what we gain from flubs of all stripes. She illustrates how we and our organizations can embrace our human fallibility\, learn exactly when failure is our friend\, and prevent most of it when it is not. \nThis is the key to pursuing smart risks and preventing avoidable harm. With vivid\, real-life stories from business\, pop culture\, history\, and more\, Edmondson gives us specifically tailored practices\, skills\, and mindsets to help us replace shame and blame with curiosity\, vulnerability\, and personal growth. You’ll never look at failure the same way again. \nRegister here: https://insead.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_L1Cws2BTTZei0uV9jahKiQ#/registration
