SUMMARY:Demand and supply of LTC services : new perspectives from economics\, sociology and political sciences - HEC Montreal
DESCRIPTION:The population of industrialized countries is aging\, leading to a prioritization of economic\, sociological\, and political issues related to support and long-term care programs for seniors. Quebec and Canada are not excluded from this demographic trend and several public reports demonstrate the need to examine the coverage\, generosity\, and costs of these programs to better plan for the years to come. \nThis event is organized by Marie-Louise Leroux (UQAM\, CIRANO) and Patrik Marier (Concordia University)\, in collaboration with CREEI\, CREGÉS\, FRQSC\, the RSI\, ESG UQAM\, Concordia University and CIRANO. \nIt will bring together numerous world-renowned researchers in political science\, economics\, and sociology\, aiming to take stock of the major questions linked to the issues around loss of autonomy\, stimulate discussion on these societal issues\, and provide possible answers. \nSome of the questions that will be addressed are: \n\nWhat solutions should public authorities put in place to provide adequate support and care for seniors and their caregivers?\nWill seniors have the financial resources to meet increased needs\, such as adapting their housing\, using nursing services and help with daily living tasks?\nWhat are the preferences of seniors regarding the mode of care in the event of loss of autonomy; do they prefer to stay at home or go to a residential and long-term care centre (chslds)? What are the issues linked to different modes of care?\nWhat are the financial and psychological consequences for the relatives (caregivers) of seniors losing their autonomy?

SUMMARY:Learning and Stochastic Optimization for Industrial Mining Complexes - HEC Montreal
DESCRIPTION:Decision-making in complex and/or stochastic settings\, such as industrial mining complexes\, presents significant challenges across various sectors. This seminar will delve into a novel solution approach that integrates machine learning and optimization for mineral supply/value chains under supply and demand uncertainties. We will explore three interconnected paradigm shifts: 1) data-driven hyper-heuristics with a heuristic search tree and self-adaptive framework; 2) smart lifelong learning context-aware solvers\, with a hyper-heuristic for dynamic mining complex modeling\, neural diving policy for heuristic selection\, and neural branching policy with a soft branching strategy; and 3) a distributional perspective for warm-starting\, using historical solutions and graphical models for initial production schedules. The performance of the proposed approach will be demonstrated through computational results and case studies\, showcasing up to three orders of magnitude reductions in primal suboptimality and execution times\, and increased robustness in solutions yielding up to 40% higher net present values. Finally\, we will discuss insights\, potential limitations\, and future research directions in developing robust\, reasoning\, and responsible decision-support systems for industrial-scale uncertain environments. \nRegister here: https://www.gerad.ca/en/events/2201

SUMMARY:The Cash-Flow Channel of Monetary Policy - Evidence from Billions of Transactions - NHH Norwegian School of Economics
DESCRIPTION:We present novel findings on the impact of monetary policy on consumer spending behavior using a recently assembled high-frequency household expenditure panel. Leveraging comprehensive weekly electronic transaction-level data for all individuals in Norway in the period 2006-2018\, our study sheds light on the high-frequency consumption response to monetary policy through changes in fast moving debt interest expenses. \nWe employ several identification strategies\, including household specific interest rate shocks arising from a natural experiment as well as estimated monetary policy shocks.  We find that 100 NOK higher interest expenses lead to around 30 NOK lower consumption on average in the first year\, and the effect materializes gradually within the first three months. Our results indicate the presence of a substantial and rapid cash-flow channel of monetary policy.

SUMMARY:Will AI reduce or reinforce inequality in language learning? - Hult International Business School
DESCRIPTION:AI’s role in language learning\n\nIn the AI-powered evolution of language learning\, it would be easy to overlook the impact artificial intelligence could have on inclusion and equality. For decades\, the demand for ‘native’ teachers has dominated the conversation between students and language providers. Learners have come to recognize the valuable experience that ‘non-native’ speakers can share with them\, but now the question isn’t whether you want a native or a non-native teacher – it’s whether you want a human at all. \nWe recently reported on how AI is enhancing language learning for students and teachers alike. Now\, we explore some of the DEIB issues that often go overlooked in language learning\, how AI is already impacting inclusion\, and its potential to reduce or reinforce inequalities. \n\nRegister here: https://www.hultef.com/en/insights/events-webinars/ai-language-webinar/
